Brescia University Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Program* Awarded Candidacy from CAA

Brescia University’s Master of Science program in Speech-Language Pathology* is a Candidate for Accreditation by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.  This is a “pre-accreditation” status with the CAA, awarded to developing or emerging programs for a maximum period of five years. The program will be offered exclusively online making it incredibly unique among other Speech-Language Pathology programs across the country. Brescia has been expanding its graduate program offerings over the last few years, including the creation of a masters in clinical psychology and updated MBA programs.

“At Brescia University we are always looking for opportunities to serve both our students and our community. This degree program does both by giving our undergraduate students a readily accessible graduate program and by providing our community with much needed speech language practitioners,” expressed Brescia University President, Fr. Larry Hostetter. “I’m grateful to all of our hard working faculty and staff who have brought us to this point in the development of the program. The Brescia Difference in action.”

The CAA awards candidacy to newly developed programs with no students enrolled, with appropriate state level authority to offer the graduate program. To maintain the candidacy, Brescia will continue to evolve the program and stay within compliance standards set by the CAA. Compliance measures are reported annually to the CAA. The CAA’s candidacy status is a status that is applicable during the first five years of a new program.

“We are thrilled to learn that our M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology program* has been approved for candidacy by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. We anticipate our first cohort for August 2021 and have a set application deadline of May 15th,” stated Sagan Storm, Associate Director of Graduate Admissions.

Graduates from CAA accredited programs are eligible for the clinical fellow, a mentoring period, after graduation. If the clinical fellow is completed successfully, graduates can then earn ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), which is considered the “gold standard” of speech-language pathology licensing in the United States.

Vice President for Academic Affairs/ Academic Dean, Dr. Jeffrey Barnette said, “I am excited to be able to offer this new degree to our students as there is such a demonstrated need.  This is another prime example of Brescia University continuing the Ursuline educational tradition by responding to the needs of the times and providing an education to those who otherwise would not have had access to one.”

“Students can begin the free application process today at Brescia.edu/apply. A successful candidate will have a completed Communication Science and Disorders undergraduate with grades of A or B in all major courses. Current seniors are welcome to apply,” explained Storm. “There is no GRE or GMAT required. Non-CSD students will need prerequisite courses which can be found on our webpage. Questions about prerequisites and application material can be sent to [email protected].”
