2023-2024 Scholarship Opportunities

There are a number of scholarship opportunities available to students for the 2023-2024 academic year. 

 

JB Hocker Good Government Scholarship

This scholarship is offered once a year to a full-time on-campus student enrolled in one or more course(s) in Political Science or History.  It is open to on-ground students from any major. 

In order to be nominated for the scholarship, students must write an essay addressing one of the three topics listed below.  Upon evaluation of the essays, the faculty committee will nominate candidates for the scholarship.  The final decision will be made by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Financial Aid Office.  The recipient of the JB Hocker Good Government Scholarship for the Academic Year 2023-2024 will present their essay during the Celebration of Excellence on April 23rd.  

600-900 word essay, addressing one of the following questions (sent as an email attachment in a Word format):

  1. How does cynicism affect political participation among the public and actions of those within the government, and thereby the general health of democracy?
  2. What policies and actions would you suggest to increase the participation of young people in governance at local, state, and national levels?
  3. What role does volunteerism play in building a strong civil society and a healthy political culture? 

In your essays, please utilize the knowledge and skills you have gained in your courses in order to present well-supported, well-written, and well-argued positions.  Please make sure to cite your research in one of the generally accepted citation formats.  

In addition to the essay, please submit a brief resume, which should include your major, GPA, and a list of your activities (both at Brescia and in the broader community).

The Phillip Hayden Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is offered to full-time, on-campus students with a serious interest in attending law school.  You do not need to be a pre-law major.  Students from any major can apply.  To be eligible for this scholarship, students need to be a current student at Brescia University and have at least a 3.0 GPA. 

To apply for this scholarship, students must write an essay entitled “Why I Want to Become a Lawyer.”  The essay should be a minimum of 1,000 words, and it should be no more than 3,000 words in length.  

In addition to submitting the aforementioned essay, applicants should also submit a resume which includes any work experience, awards,  and extracurricular activities.  

 In the resume, in addition to the standard information, applicants should include the following information

  1. current GPA
  2. current class status (i.e. freshman, sophomore, etc.)
  3. anticipated graduation date/term from Brescia
  4. anticipated date/term for starting Law School

Senator Delbert S. Murphy Alumni Scholarship

Applicants for this $1,000* scholarship must be full-time traditional/on-ground student, be a senior in the 2023-2024 academic year, and hold a GPA of 3.0 or higher in their major.

To apply, please complete the application and submit a 500 (minimum) word essay on how you plan to live “The Brescia Difference” as an alumna/alumnus of Brescia University.

Applications may be submitted to the Director of Alumni and Donor Relations electronically at [email protected] or via campus mail (Alumni Scholarship C/O Jake Davis).

Applications must be submitted by 4:30 pm on Wednesday March 8th, 2023.

The winning essay/application will be chosen by the Brescia University Alumni Association Board of Directors, and the winner will be notified by April 1st, 2023.
